Fuel Type

Choosing the right type of generator and the fuel to use can be very important in terms of overall costs, petrol generators tend to be smaller, lighter and cheaper than diesel generators, however depending on the hours they will run and how often they will run a diesel set will often be a cheaper option in terms of overall whole of life cost. Smaller air cooled, 3000rpm generators whether petrol or diesel, only really differ in terms of fuel, although diesel sets tend to be a lot more expensive at the outset, however there many areas where safety is an issue and petrol sets are not allowed to be used, petrol sets can however be converted to run on either natural gas or LPG, which is safer and offers longer running times, dependent on the size of gas bottle used. If the generator is to be used on a constant basis diesel can work out cheaper in the long run providing you run it on red diesel. Once you move up in size the options are primarily limited to diesel engines and some gas engines

If noise is not an issue then a standard open frame set may suffice, if noise is an issue but some background noise is acceptable then a silenced generator is best option, if however noise is an issue and will cause significant irritation or aggravation to those within earshot the super silenced is the option.
