Application
For example a standby generator only operates intermittently and tends only to be used in the event of the failure of your incoming mains supply, typically the generator will only run for several hours but only infrequently. Prime Power generators are designed to provide continuous power to your load for extended period, possibly days, weeks of even months. Please complete the boxes below indicating Application, Frequency of Use and Operating Hours

Fuel Type
Choosing the right type of generator and the fuel to use can be very important in terms of overall costs, petrol generators tend to be smaller, lighter and cheaper than diesel generators, however depending on the hours they will run and how often they will run a diesel set will often be a cheaper option in terms of overall whole of life cost. Smaller air cooled, 3000rpm generators whether petrol or diesel, only really differ in terms of fuel, although diesel sets tend to be a lot more expensive at the outset, however there many areas where safety is an issue and petrol sets are not allowed to be used, petrol sets can however be converted to run on either natural gas or LPG, which is safer and offers longer running times, dependent on the size of gas bottle used. If the generator is to be used on a constant basis diesel can work out cheaper in the long run providing you run it on red diesel. Once you move up in size the options are primarily limited to diesel engines and some gas engines

Starting Method
There are primarily 3 starting methods for your generator, recoil start, only available of small petrol or LPG generators, electric start via key switch or remote panel and fully automatic, the application and budget will determine which is the best option.
Manual Recoil Local Electric Start Remote Electric Start Automatic Start
Sound Level
The application will again have an impact on the sound level requires, simply because a generator complies with current noise regulations doesn't make it quiet, only legal to use. If noise is not an issue then a standard open frame set may suffice, if noise is an issue but some background noise is acceptable then a silenced generator is best option, if however noise is an issue and will cause significant irritation or aggravation to those within earshot the super silenced is the option.
